What is Naprapathic Medicine?
Naprapathic Medicine utilizes manual manipulation,
nutritional counseling and therapeutic modalities in the treatment of
connective tissue disorders. Doctors of Naprapathic Medicine also
use neuromyology (the study of nerve and muscle) to increase their
understanding of these disorders and enhance the treatment of their
patients.
What is connective tissue?
Connective tissue is found throughout the human
body. It includes ligament, tendons, muscles, cartilage and other
structures, and provides support to every system of the body.
Your body is a complex network of connective
tissue, which can become imbalanced: too tight in some areas
(contracted), too loose in other areas (lax). These imbalances
often result in pain. You may be totally unaware that have
comprehensive musculoskeletal imbalances until a build-up of signs and
symptoms reaches an unbearable level of pain and loss of function.
These imbalances can occur slowly and,
over time, cause your body's connective tissue to become "tight" and
distorted. This can put strain and stress on the body's
musculoskeletal system and lead to a variety of problems.
Some causes of imbalance are:
- Poor sleeping position
- Faulty posture
- Improper biomechanics
- Predisposition (family history)
Imbalances can also occur due to sudden trauma,
such as:
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Falls
- Sports injuries
Evaluation:
A thorough evaluation can include the following:
- Detailed medical history
- Postural analysis
- Orthopedic and neurological testing
- Muscle and range of motion examinations
- Use of MRI reports
Most importantly, Naprapaths are connective
tissue specialists who detect tissue imbalances and structural
imbalances in the body using the most sensitive instrument in the world:
their hands!
Treatment:
Naprapathic treatment consists of Naprapathic
manipulative techniques, adjunctive treatments (modalities) and
nutritional counseling.
Naprapathic Techniques:
- Gentle manipulation of the vertebrae to
stretch the attached, contracted connective tissue that may be
irritating the nerves as they exit the spinal column.
- Manipulation/mobilization of the
muscles and related soft tissue structures help restore
imbalances.
- Joint mobilization of restricted joints
and articulations to restore full range of motion.
Adjunctive Therapies:
Various modalities that may be recommended
include:
- Electro-therapy
- Ultrasound
- Moist Heat/Cryotherapy
- Traction
- Therapeutic/Rehabilitative exercises
- Orthopedic appliances and supports
- Orthotic fittings and training
Nutritional Counseling:
Your Naprapath assesses your diet through
case history and various clinical tests (i.e. saliva test,
bloodwork) to establish optimal recommendations for your diet and
supplement intake.
